Why burnout happens and how to avoid it

We bet that at least once you had a feeling of burning out. This feeling comes with exhaustion and depression. Today we want to highlight main reasons why burnout happens and how to avoid it.

What is burnout?

Burnout is a state of emotional, physical, and mental exhaustion caused by excessive and prolonged stress. It occurs when you feel overwhelmed, emotionally drained, and unable to meet constant demands.

It’s quite important to mention that there is a huge difference between stress and burnout. Burnout usually becomes the result of stress: emotions are blunted, loss of energy, nothing brings a joy and you feel emotionally drained.

Why burnout happens?

There might be several factors why burnout happens. Work-related and personal reasons are the most frequent and impactful on health.

  • Overworking without taking breaks
  • Inability to stress control
  • Working in high-pressure environment – toxic people
  • Lack of support from relatives and teammates
  • Pessimistic view for the thing that surround us
  • Not “healthy” perfectionism

So, how to avoid feeling burned out?

We won’t tell you something new here, but going through these points one more time:

Exercising is a powerful antidote

Even a 20-minute walk can improve your mood and productivity for next 4 hours. Exercising for 1 hour per day can help you to break the limits and identify the sources of stress. Rhythmic exercise, where you move both your arms and legs, is a hugely effective way to increase energy, sharpen focus, and relax both the mind and body.

Stress management

Working on something we don’t care about is called stress. If you can’t change the stressor, change yourself. You can adapt to stressful situations and regain your sense of control by changing your expectations and attitude.

Learn to say “NO” and how to make right choices, so you wouldn’t complain about bad conditions at work or bad environment. Accept the things you can’t change and move on!

Get rid of toxic environment

Isolate yourself from negative people. They always blame, complain and will never give you an opportunity to move forward. Faster you will limit the amount of time spending with negative-minded people, sooner you’ll find out the rest of problems that stop you from doing more.

Find balance in your life

Everything in our life is about finding a balance. There is a theory about gaining a balance that tells us to find 3 hobbies: one to make you money, one to keep you in shape and one that let's you be creative. It’s pretty simple to talk about it, but not as simple as it is in real life.

The power of giving

Being helpful to others and not waiting for something in return delivers immense pleasure and can help to significantly reduce stress as well as broaden your social circle. Even small things like a kind word or friendly smile can make you feel better and help lower stress both for you and the other person.
